How Much Does a Full Valet Cost in Scotland? Honest Prices From a Livingston Detailer

Most people asking this question do not want an essay. They want a number, so they know whether the quote sitting in their inbox is fair.

Here it is. A proper full valet in Scotland usually costs between £70 and £120 for a normal-sized car. Ours starts at £75.

The rest of this is about why that spread exists, and how to tell whether the cheap end is a bargain or a warning.

The short answer

Those brackets overlap, and they should. A £70 valet on a Polo and a £120 valet on a Discovery can be the exact same standard of work.

What counts as a full valet

Nobody regulates the phrase. There is no legal definition of a valet in the UK, so a business can print whatever it likes on a price list, which is precisely why comparing quotes on the name alone gets people burnt.

When we say full valet, we mean the whole car, inside and out:

• Wheels, arches and tyres cleaned before anything else touches the car.
• Citrus prewash and pH-neutral snow foam to soften the dirt, then a two-bucket lambswool mitt wash so the grit is lifted off rather than dragged across the paint.
• Badges, grilles, panel gaps, handles, fuel flap and door shuts degreased by hand. The bits everyone skips.
• Purified water rinse, towel dry, crevices blown out so nothing drips down the doors an hour later.
• Trim and tyres dressed, then a spray wax for gloss and beading.
• Inside: rubbish out, carpets and seats agitated then vacuumed, mats out and done both sides, boot liner, roof lining, vents, buttons, cup holders, glovebox, sun visors.
• Plastics and facias cleaned and dressed, interior glass done, air freshener in your choice of scent.

That is the full list on our Full Valet, and it is a useful yardstick when you are reading somebody else's. If a package does not mention door shuts, mats coming out, or what is going on the paint at the end, ask.

Full valet prices across Scotland

Prices do not vary as much across the country as people expect. Edinburgh and Glasgow sit slightly higher than rural Aberdeenshire or Ayrshire, but not dramatically. What actually moves the number is the operator's setup and how long they intend to spend on your car.

A few things worth knowing before you compare:

Most Scottish price lists are tiered by vehicle size, so the headline figure you see advertised is almost always the small car price. A "full valet from £70" on a Fiesta is often £95 or more by the time it is a Q7.

"From" is doing a lot of work in most adverts. A £50 full valet is real, but it is a starting point that assumes a small car in decent condition, and it moves the moment the car is not that.

Mobile operators carry their own water and power and absorb travel time. Static units do not, but you have to leave the car with them for the day. Neither is inherently better value. It depends on whether your time or your money is the scarcer thing that week.

Why two quotes look nothing alike

Four things account for nearly every price gap you will see.

Vehicle size

The most boring variable and the biggest one. A seven-seat SUV has roughly twice the carpet, twice the glass and half again the paintwork of a supermini. Nobody can do it in the same time, so nobody should charge the same price. Anyone who quotes you one flat figure for every car on the road is either overcharging small cars or about to rush a big one.

Condition

This is the one that catches people out. Two identical Golfs can be a two-hour job and a four-hour job depending entirely on what has been living in the back of them. Dog hair woven into fabric seats, juice that went down a seat rail last spring, sand from a summer of beaches, mould from a leaky sunroof nobody noticed. None of that comes out at standard valet pace.

That is not an upsell tactic, it is arithmetic. If a car needs four hours and you have paid for two, something gets skipped.

What is actually included

Some full valets are a very thorough clean and stop there. Others build in tar and iron decontamination, steam cleaning, wet extraction, machine work. Those are genuinely different services wearing similar names.

Our Full Valet is the meticulous clean plus short-term protection. Decontamination and steam cleaning live on the Deep Clean Valet. Anything involving a polisher is a separate job again. We keep them separate so you are not paying for machine work on paint that does not need it.

Mobile against static

A mobile van carries its own water tank, its own power, and the cost of driving to you. A unit spreads its overhead across more cars a day but needs you to give up your car and arrange a lift. The pricing usually lands within a tenner of each other in this part of Scotland. The difference is convenience, not quality, and there are excellent and terrible examples of both.

What we charge and what you get

Everything is published, tiered by size, and the same figure you were quoted is the figure you pay unless something turns up on the day that we flag with you first.

Every one of those is mobile and fully insured. We bring water and power, so all we need from you is access to the car and somewhere legal to park the van.

The £75 Full Valet sits deliberately mid-market. We are not the cheapest number in West Lothian and we have never tried to be, because the way to be cheapest is to spend less time on the car and there is nowhere else for that time to come from.

Add-ons and when you actually need them

Most of the "why was my quote higher than the website said" stories come from extras, so here is the full list up front:

• Seat & Carpet Extraction, from £75. Wet extraction for stains that have soaked into the fabric. Vacuuming will not touch these.
• Leather Restoration & Protection, from £65. For dry, tired or dirty leather rather than leather that is simply dusty.
• Paint Enhancement Add-On, from £80. Clay bar, hand polish, sealant or wax. A gloss step, not a correction step.
• Engine Bay Cleaning, from £35. Mostly a presentation thing, and worth it before a sale.
• Ozone Odour Removal, from £40. Smoke, damp, spoiled milk. Cleaning gets most of it, ozone finishes the job.
• Excessive pet hair, up to £15. Ordinary dog hair is included on a deep clean. This is for the cars that are more hair than car.

You will not need most of these. We would rather tell you that on the phone than add them to a bill.

Why Scottish winters change the maths

Here is where a valet stops being cosmetic.

The gritters are out across West Lothian for months at a time and the roads stay wet with brine long after the snow has gone. That salt works its way into the arches, the sills, the lower doors and the number-plate recess, and it sits there. Where the paint is already chipped or scuffed, it gets underneath and starts eating. A car that never sees a hose between November and March is quietly corroding in all the places you never look.

Then the salt comes inside with you, ground into the carpets and mats every time you get in with wet boots.

So the £75 you spend a few times a year is not really being spent on a shiny car. It is being spent on not paying a bodyshop later. Rinsing salt off regularly is one of the cheapest things you can do to a vehicle, and it is the reason we push maintenance washes between valets rather than trying to sell everyone the biggest package on the list.

What we would avoid, honestly, is the £10 roadside wash as your winter strategy. Strong chemistry and a shared brush will strip whatever protection is on the paint and put fine scratches back in, which gives the salt an easier route in rather than a harder one. If budget is the constraint, a protection wash and wax a couple of times through winter does far more good than six cheap washes.

Which package should you book?

Straightforward version:

The car is basically fine, just grubby. Full Valet, £75 and up. Regular resets, before a holiday, before a wedding, or because you have simply had enough of the state of it.

The car is genuinely rough. Full Deep Clean Valet, £125 and up. Kids, dogs, a long commute, or two years of nobody caring. Tar and iron come off the paint, steam goes through the inside, and it takes three to four hours because it has to.

You are selling it or handing it back. Pre-Sale & Lease Return Valet, from £100. Hand polish, glaze and micro-scratch correction on two panels of your choice, plus the full interior. Lease companies charge real money for scuffs and stains, so this one tends to pay for itself.

The paint looks flat or swirled. That is not a valeting problem and no amount of washing fixes it. Machine polishing starts at £150, because the defects are in the clear coat rather than on top of it.

You want protection that lasts years. Ceramic coating from £200, though the honest caveat is that a coating is only as good as the paint underneath it. Coat swirled paint and you have sealed the swirls in. If the car is a used buy, is ceramic coating worth it on a used car goes through the sums.
